Vince Carter was born and raised in Daytona Beach, Florida. He went to Mainland High School and was highly involved in the game of basketball. Vince enjoyed playing the game and he was extremely good at it. Along with basketball, Carter had played football and volleyball. He was a natural athlete and was successful at these sports as well, but not as much as basketball. Vince ended up getting injured playing football during his freshman year at Mainland. He healed from the injury and decided to just stick with the game of basketball.
Focus On One Game
Vince Carter was a scoring machine and college recruiters saw his great skill. He was named as Florida Mr. Basketball in 1998 and ended up receiving boxes of recruitment letters. These letters came from colleges and universities all across the country. Vince had received mail from over seventy different Division 1 schools. The Tar Heels from the University of North Carolina were one school that was very interested in having him on their team.
Becoming A Tar Heel
Vince Carter decided to become a Tarheel and continue his basketball career at the University of North Carolina. He was success as a Tarheel and played three seasons before moving onto the next level. Vince excelled during his junior season where he averaged around 15.6 points per game. He also helped lead the University of North Carolina to back-to-back ACC titles and back-to-back NCAA Final Four appearances. Carter received First Team All-ACC and Second Team All-American awards while he was there. The kid could play basketball and he was a star. Carter received notice from scouts at the professional level and decided to enter for the 1998 NBA Draft.
The Star Rookie
The Golden State Warriors were the team that had initially drafted Vince Carter during the fifth round of the 1998 NBA Draft. They ended up trading him to the Toronto Raptors where he would begin his NBA career. Carter ended up being a star right off the bat as he averaged around 18.3 points per game. He was becoming well-known for his dunks as he would drive down the lane and throw down ferocious dunks. Vince ended up receiving the Rookie of the Year Award in his first season. He had a bright future ahead of him and many more years to come.
Along with receiving the Rookie of the Year Award, Vince Carter has had many more awards and accomplishments. He is an 8-time NBA All-Star and was named to the All-NBA Second Team in 2001. He won the Slam Dunk Competition back in the year 2000 and put on an absolute show at that event. The fans loved watching him at that competition. Vince was named the NBA Teammate of the Year in 2016 and helped lead the United States to winning an Olympic Gold Medal in the 2000 Olympic Games. That is quite the accomplishment. There are not too many people who can say they have won a gold medal. Carter has shown what he is capable of within the game of basketball and has proved himself as a player. The fans love watching this man play and compete on the court.
Slam Dunk Competition
One of Vince Carters most memorable moments came during the Slam Dunk contest in the year 2000. This contest took place at the Oakland Arena, which is the house of the Golden State Warriors. Many people packed out the stadium that night and they sure would be glad that they did. Vince Carter was about to put on a show. Carter had many dunks that night that awed the crowd. He ended up trying to pull off the reverse 360 degree windmill dunk. Vince nailed it and the crowd went crazy. Along with that dunk he did one where he put his whole elbow inside the rim and hung from it. This is called the soaring honey-dip. This dunk shocked the crowd and many wondered how what he did was even possible. Carter finished the night with a bounce from one of his teammates where he jumped, threw the ball between his legs, and dunked it. The crowd was enjoying the dunks and the show that Vince was putting on that night. He went on to win the contest and that night in February of 2000 will always be remembered as one of the best Slam Dunk Contests of all time.
Outside Of Basketball
Vince Carter was very involved outside the game of basketball. He did a little bit of acting and appeared in the movie “Like Mike”. This is a basketball movie and Vince appears as one of the players for the opposing team during this movie. He also appeared in the television show “Moesha” back in 1999. Carter was on the cover of the NBA Live 2004 video game as well. Along with these accomplishments, Vince opened up his own restaurant in Daytona Beach, Florida in 2010 called “Vince Carters”. It is fun to see the hobbies and things he got involved with in his personal life and outside the game of basketball. He has been involved in many other areas outside just the game itself.
Embassy Of Hope
Vince Carter started his own charity called “Embassy of Hope”. This charity’s focus is to help address the needs of children and their parents and is a non-profit organization. It is based out of the state of Florida, where Vince is from. This truly shows the importance of giving back and helping others. Carter is using the blessings he has been given and is using them to impact others in a positive way. That right there is bigger than basketball.
An All Time Great
