Earning The Nickname
Born in Lansing, Michigan, this 6 foot and 9 inch tall point guard was one of the greatest players in the history of the NBA. Magic Johnson played High School ball at Everett High School and this is where he first earned the nickname of “Magic”. A local sports writer had given Johnson this nickname after watching one of his high school games and the incredible performance that he had. Some of the passes and plays that he made seemed to be almost magical. The name stuck with Earvin from then on out and many people called him that. He averaged 28.8 points while at Everett along with 16.8 rebounds and led the team to a state title. The success that he had on the court in high school got him attention from college recruiters.
Michigan State University was interested in having Magic Johnson play for them and being from Michigan, Johnson enrolled at Michigan State University because it was close to his house. He put up some impressive numbers in his freshman season with the Spartans and managed to average 17 points, 7.9 rebounds, and 7.4 assists per game. The Spartans had a 25-5 record that first year Johnson was with them and ended up winning the Big Ten Championship. Magic then led the team to a National Championship in his sophomore year with Michigan State. The Spartans faced off against Larry Bird and the Indiana State Sycamores. This was a match-up between two great college stars and future NBA legends. The Spartans ended up winning the championship game that year. This was one of the most popular and highly watched NCAA championship games of all time.
The NBA scouts had lots of interest in Magic after the success he had shown on the court throughout his college career. Magic decided to enter the draft after his sophomore season and pass up his two finals seasons at Michigan State. He was the first pick in the 1979 NBA Draft and was selected by the Los Angeles Lakers. Johnson would end up playing all 13 seasons of his career with the Lakers. In his rookie season, Magic led the team to win the NBA championship and Johnson ended up getting the NBA Finals MVP. At this point in the series the Lakers were up 2 games to 1 over the Celtics. The game was a close one and Larry Bird ended up hitting a three-pointer with 12 seconds to go to pull the Celtics in the lead 106 to 104. The Lakers got fouled and ended up making one of the two free throws to bring it within one point.
The Hook Shot
The ball ended up going out of bounds off of the Celtics and this gave the Lakers one last possession. They gave the ball to Magic on the inbound and he dribbled toward the hoop. With the game on the line he ended up taking an off balanced hook shot. The ball soared through the air and ended up going through the net. This gave the Lakers the lead with seconds to go. The Celtics were unable to convert in the final seconds and the Lakers ended up with the victory with a score of 107-106. This was a big moment in Johnson’s career as he hit the shot to win the game. The Lakers went on to win the rest of the series and bring home the championship.
20 Year-Old Star
Another phenomenal performance and memorable moment from Magic came during Game 6 of the 1980 NBA Finals. Johnson was only 20 years old during this championship run that the Lakers were having. The Lakers superstar, Kareem Abdul-Jabaar, was out with injury and so it was up to Magic to help lead his team to a victory. It was still very early on in Magic’s career and so people were still unsure on how he would perform. Needless to say, Johnson did not let the Lakers fans down.
Magic started at center in place of Kareem and ended up having a great night. He was hitting shot after shot and was also contributing in rebounds and assists. Magic ended up with 42 points, 15 rebounds, and 7 assists that night. He had taken advantage of the opportunity and proven himself to the basketball world. End Of Career
