Multi-Sport Athlete

Mookie Betts was born in the city of Nashville, Tennessee where he attended John Overton High School. As a young kid, Mookie was involved in multiple different sports. He was a great athlete and played basketball, baseball, and bowled as well. Betts received multiple Most Valuable Player awards throughout his young basketball career. He played in the youth league there in Tennessee and was awarded the All-City Player of the Year as well. The kid could ball. Along with the game of basketball, Mookie was a very successful baseball player.

Baseball Career

During his junior and senior year of high school, Mookie Betts ended up hitting .548 and .508. He was an above .500 hitter in both seasons…which is crazy! He stole 24 bags as a junior and swiped 30 of them as a senior. Betts was a natural athlete and got quite a bit of attention for his ability. The schools that were interested in him included the University of Alabama at Birmingham, Vanderbilt University, the University of Tennessee, and Mississippi State University. Many of these schools listed are baseball powerhouses and make a run at the College World Series continuously. Mookie decided to sign to play at the University of Tennessee and stay in his home state. He never made it as a Volunteer though. His baseball career ended up going a different direction.

Early Career

Many professional scouts had interest in Mookie Betts and the Boston Red Sox were one of them. The Red Sox selected Betts in the 5th round of the 2011 MLB Draft with the 172nd pick overall. They didn’t know it at the moment, but this kid that they had just picked was going to be a superstar. Early on in his career, Betts started out as a middle infielder. He spent about 3 years in the minor leagues and moved his way up the farm system. He worked hard and continued to improve his game. Mookie had some great seasons while in the minors before he made his big league debut.

Big League Debut

Mookie Betts made his Major League Debut on June 29, 2014 against the New York Yankees. There is a big rivalry between the New York Yankees and the Boston Red Sox and that must have been exciting to have his first MLB start to come during the rivalry. I’m sure Betts was a little anxious, but he ended up getting his first major league hit that night against the Yankees. He ended up moving back and forth between the minor leagues and the Red Sox the rest of that season. While he was up at the professional level, Mookie ended up hitting his first career grand slam. At the age of 21, he was one of the youngest players to hit a grand slam in a long time. What an accomplishment at such a young age.

The 2015 season is when Mookie Betts professional career really started to take off. You may be thinking to yourself that he already had his first major league hit against the Yankees and hit a grand slam at the age of 21, that’s pretty good right? Yes that is good, but with Betts it gets even better. On Opening Day in 2015, Betts was in the starting lineup and ended up hitting a home run in the opener. He showed that he was ready to go and was the third youngest player to hit an Opening Day home run. From the first game in 2015, his career took off. So far throughout his career Mookie Betts has had some great years and has been selected as an All-Star 3 times, won the Gold Glove Award twice, and won the Silver Slugger once. He is still so young and it will be exciting to see where the rest of his career takes him.

Hits For The Cycle

A big night came for Mookie Betts on August 9, 2018. It was a warm summer night and the Boston Red Sox were facing off against the Toronto Blue Jays. Betts hit for the cycle that night and did it in dramatic fashion. Hitting for the cycle is when you hit a single, double, triple, and home run in the same game. It was dramatic because of the order that he had hit them in. He started off with a single, then a triple, then the double. He ended up coming up to bat in the sixth inning and the fans were hoping to see him complete the cycle with a homer. They didn’t get what they were looking for as Mookie drew a walk and ended up taking first base. The fans were looking for Betts to be given another chance that night before the ball game came to an end. Betts didn’t come up again until the 9th inning, the last chance of the game. The fans and baseball world were on the edge of their seats and Mookie delivered. He ended up hitting a moonshot in the last inning of the game and completing the cycle. The Boston fans were going crazy and they loved it. Mookie Betts had just hit for the cycle.

Another memorable moment came for Mookie Betts on the 27th of July in the year of 2018. This game was between the Boston Red Sox and the Minnesota Twins. The score was tied 2-2 in the tenth inning. It was a tight game and had gone into extra innings. Luckily, the Sox had Betts coming up to the plate. During this at bat, with the game on the line, Mookie belted a home run over the Green Monster in left field at Fenway Park. He had just hit the game winning home run and just like that with one swing of the bat the game was over. The city of Boston exploded with cheers and excitement as Betts had just hit his first career walk off home run. The team crowded around home plate as he rounded the bases and the cooler of water was dumped on him in celebration. What a night for the young kid.

Bowling Career

Mookie Betts has more talents than just being one of the greatest baseball players in the game today. He is a very talented bowler and actually has had quite the bowling career. During his high school years, he was named the Bowler of the Year and he had a high score of 290. Mookie ended up continuing with bowling and competed at the professional level. He competed in the Professional Bowlers Association and in the World Series of Bowling in 2015 and 2017. Betts has showed his skills at this professional level and has thrown three perfect games with a score of 300. That is incredible. Mookie Betts sure can do it all!

Bright Future Ahead

Mookie Betts is one of the most talented players in Major League Baseball today and it will be interesting to see where the rest of his career takes him. Hopefully he will be able to continue to grow and be successful. The city of Boston is lucky to have such a great athlete and is hoping that he will help bring them a World Series ring in the next few years.
