Runs In The Family
Matt Ryan was born and raised in the state of Pennsylvania. He grew up with three other siblings and both his uncle and his cousin played the game of football in college. His uncle played at Boston College and his cousin at Notre Dame. The game of football ran in the family and Matt began to play it when he was a kid too.
Three-Sport Team Captain
As Matt Ryan grew older, he attended William Penn Charter School in Philadelphia. While at William Penn, he played three different sports. Ryan was an athletic kid and played football, baseball, and basketball. He was the team captain for all three sports teams his senior year. Matt excelled in athletics that’s for sure. He was solid on the court and on the diamond, but his specialty was on the gridiron. He was a great quarterback and began to receive notice as just a sophomore. The college recruiters liked what they saw in Ryan and he got offered scholarships to play football from many schools. These schools included Georgia Tech, Purdue, and Boston College. Matt liked what he saw at Boston College and decided to continue both his athletic and academic careers there. Matt Ryan was going to be an Eagle.
Boston College Success
Matt Ryan had a successful few years while at Boston College. He actually did not end up starting his first year. Ryan red shirted as a freshman, but saw some playing time during his sophomore season. He had to compete and work to become the starting quarterback and didn’t truly breakout until the 2006 season. Matt ended up starting in eleven out of twelve games that year and ended up playing rather well. He received All-ACC awards for his offensive. He also ended up having another great season in 2007 and led the Eagles to many victories. Ryan received lots of recognition throughout his career and was named for many awards. He was awarded many awards which included the ACC Player of the Year, First Team All-American, First Team All ACC, the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award, and the Manning Award. Along with these awards he was also named as the ACC Player of the Week six different times. Ryan had received all kinds of awards and brought in attention from professional scouts.
The scouts loved what they saw in Matt Ryan’s ability and he was selected with the third overall pick in the 2008 NFL Draft. The Atlanta Falcons were the team that picked up this star. He started hot right out of the gate and was the starting quarterback for the Falcons in just his very first season. The incredible thing is that Ryan’s first career NFL pass was completed for a 62 yard touchdown. Talk about a great way to start a career. You can’t get much better than that. From that moment Ryan’s career began to take off and he continued to play well throughout his rookie season.
The Falcons Star
During Matt Ryan’s rookie season he was named as Rookie of the Week and NFC Offensive Player of the Week. Matt started in all 16 games during his first year and he helped lead the Falcons to a playoff appearance. Ryan was named as the NFL Rookie of the Year as well. Along with all these rookie awards he continued to perform in the following years with the Falcons. He has been with the city of Atlanta for his entire career and has been named to the Pro Bowl four different times. Matt was named the NFC Most Valuable Player and the NFL Offensive Player of the Year in 2016. Ryan also was named to First-Team All-Pro and received the Bert Bell Award in 2016. The year of 2016 was a solid year for the Falcons quarterback…up until the very end.
Matt Ryan and the Falcons had a great 2016 season and made it all the way to the Super Bowl, but it was not the type of
ending that they were looking for. The Atlanta Falcons faced off against Tom Brady and the New England Patriots in this championship game. Matt Ryan and the Falcons were up by a score of 28-3. The game seemed so far out of hand that many people turned off their television and stopped watching. The game had then started to change and go downhill for the city of Atlanta. Tom Brady would march his team downfield and start putting more and more points on the board. The game went from a 28-3 deficit to a tie ball game at 28 apiece. It had gone into overtime. The Patriots ended up winning in overtime by a score of 34-28. They scored 31 unanswered points and took the ring right off the Falcons fingers. This game was a nightmare for the city of Atlanta.
