From Australia To The United States
Kyrie Irving was born outside of the United States. He was born in Melbourne, Australia, but both of his parents were American. Kyrie’s dad was very involved in the game of basketball and had played professionally over in Australia. They had Kyrie and when he was just two years old they decided to move back to the United States. They lived and raised Kyrie in the state of New Jersey. Sadly, his mother had passed away when he was still very young from an illness. I can’t imagine what the Irving family had to go through. Kyrie was raised mainly by his father and his aunts.
Fifth Grade Offer
With Kyrie’s father being highly involved in the game of basketball and playing at the professional level, this caused Kyrie to grow up around the game. His dad played in some adult leagues in the city of Boston and so Kyrie would go watch his dad play. He enjoyed being around the game and would spend lots of time there. His father played quite a bit at Boston University, so Kyrie would play there as well. He would showcase his abilities and became quite good. By the time he was in fifth grade the coach of the Boston University basketball team offered Kyrie a scholarship to play basketball for them when he was older. The kid was in fifth grade. Irving said at a young age that he would play in the National Basketball Association, so he kept working at the game to perfect his skills.
Kyrie Irving attended a few different high schools during his teenage years. He first went to Montclair Kimberley Academy in New Jersey for his first two years. He played on the basketball team and was a star. While at Montclair, Kyrie averaged over 26 points and 10 assists per game. He felt that he needed more of a challenge and wanted to go to a better basketball school. Kyrie transferred to St. Patrick High School to compete with their basketball squad. He continued to have success and had a great junior and senior season. Kyrie helped lead the team to the New Jersey Tournament of Champions title and the Union County Tournament championship. He finished his senior year with averaging 24 points per game. Kyrie was one of the top players in the state.
Selected To Squads
Due to all the success Kyrie Irving had on the court in high school, he received lots of attention and was asked to participate on some other teams. In 2010, Kyrie joined the Junior National Select Team and was also selected to compete in the McDonalds All-American Game. He also participated in the Jordan Brand Classic. Kyrie had competed with some of the best kids across the country and even played on the United States gold medal winning team. This team had won the title at the FIBA Americas Under-18 Championship. Kyrie had quite the list of accomplishments at such a young age and received lots of notice for his game. There were many college scouts that wanted Irving to be a part of their team…I mean the kid had a scholarship offer in the fifth grade. As you can imagine though he decided to take his talents somewhere other than Boston University.
Joining The Blue Devils
Kyrie Irving decided to continue his career as a Blue Devil and committed to Duke University. The Blue Devils were very excited to have the young star in Irving. Kyrie started off as a key player as just a freshman and shot over fifty percent from the field with averaging over 17 points per game. The kid could play and compete at the highest level of college basketball. Irving helped lead the team to the NCAA tournament, but they ended up losing in the Sweet Sixteen of the tournament. Although they didn’t win the national title, Kyrie had a great first season. He received lots of attention from scouts at the professional level and would not be returning to Duke University. Kyrie Irving took advantage of the one and done opportunity within college basketball.
Number One Pick
With the first overall pick in the first round of the 2011 NBA Draft the Cleveland Cavaliers selected Kyrie Irving out of Duke University. Kyrie started hot right from the start and had a great rookie season. He averaged more than 18 points and 5 rebounds per game. Irving ended up winning the NBA Rookie of the Year and was recognized as the best rookie in the league. Many people across the nation were getting themselves their very own Kyrie Irving jersey.
Madison Square Garden
Kyrie suffered through some injuries at the beginning of his career, but in 2012 he had a great night and broke one of Michael Jordan’s records. In the 2012-2013 season the Cavaliers faced off against the New York Knicks. Kyrie scored 41 points during that game at Madison Square Garden and became the youngest player in the history of the NBA to score forty plus points in Madison Square Garden. He was a year younger than Michael Jordan. That is an amazing accomplishment and that shows just how talented Irving was at such a young age.
List of Accomplishments
Kyrie Irving continued to have success in his basketball career throughout the years. Along with winning the Rookie of the Year Award, Kyrie has been named as an NBA All-Star five different times. He was the NBA All-Star Game MVP in 2014 and was also the USA Basketball Male Athlete of the Year in that same year. In 2014, Irving was also named as the FIBA World Cup MVP.
