DeMar DeRozan was born and raised in the city of Compton, California. He started playing the game of basketball as a kid and became quite good at it. DeRozan attended Compton High School and played basketball all four years while he was there. He made the varsity squad each year, even as just a freshman. That shows just the type of talents and abilities that DeMar had even at such a young age. During all four years he averaged over twenty points and seven rebounds per game. DeMar was a young star and a consistent one at that.
High School Stud
While at Compton High School, DeRozan had a great senior year and helped lead the team to a 26 win and only 6 loss season. They didn’t end up winning the state championship, but DeRozan was named to the California All-State team and was recognized as part of the McDonalds All-American team. He won the McDonalds All-American Slam Dunk Contest that year and was invited to play in some games with the top players across the country. One of these games was held on the big stage of Madison Square Garden. DeMar played well and was recognized as one of the top players in the nation.
Becoming A Trojan
DeMar DeRozan was popular among college recruiters and many coaches invited him to come join them at their universities. Many of the top basketball programs in the country were seeking out DeRozan and this included schools such as the University of North Carolina, Arizona State, and the University of Southern California. DeMar decided to stay in his home state and sign with the USC Trojans. The Trojans were happy to have DeMar join their squad.
A College Star
DeMar DeRozan didn’t waste any time while at the University of Southern California and started out hot right out of
the gate. He started in all 35 games for USC as just a freshman and in his very first game he put up 21 points. He showed that he could play at the college level even as a freshman. DeMar continued to play well from then on out and even through the Pac-10 tournament. DeRozan was named First Team Pac-10 Freshman and was also named as the Pac-10 tournament MVP. He helped lead the team to the NCAA tournament, but they ended up losing in the second round. Although he didn’t win the title, he had a great freshman season. DeMar decided to forego the rest of his college career and take a shot at the NBA. He was entering into the draft.
Pursuing The NBA
With the ninth overall pick in the 2009 NBA Draft, DeMar DeRozan was selected by the Toronto Raptors. DeMar had a good first rookie season with the Raptors and scored a high of 37 points in one game that season. During his first year in the league DeRozan participated in the 2010 Slam Dunk Contest. He was very close to winning, but finished second and lost to NBA star Nate Robinson. DeMar was already competing and showing off his skills against some of the top players in the league. This was one rookie that had lots of potential.
DeRozan continued to grow and develop throughout the rest of his career with the Raptors. He has been named an NBA All-Star four different times in 2014, 2016, 2017, and 2018. DeRozan was also named to the All NBA Third Team in 2017 and the All NBA Second Team in 2018. He participated on the 2016 U.S Olympic Games gold medal winning team which is quite the accomplishment. There are not many people who can say that they have achieved this and DeRozan has accomplished a lot in his career. The Toronto Raptors traded DeMar, along with some other players, to the San Antonio Spurs in an exchange for Kawhi Leonard and Danny Green. He had a great time in Toronto and truly made a name for himself. It will be fun to watch DeMar continue to develop and take his career to new heights while in San Antonio.
While the city of Toronto loved the skills of DeMar on the basketball court, they loved what he did off the court as well. DeRozan was very involved in the community, charities, and giving back. He believed in helping others and participated with the organization Lupus Canada. He connected with this organization because his mother was affected by the Lupus disease. This is one of the reasons he went to the NBA early was so that he could try to help her as much as possible. Lupus is a disease that attacks the tissues and organs. DeRozan worked closely with this organization and helped to spread awareness.
First Book Canada
Along with Lupus Canada, DeMar DeRozan worked with First Book Canada. This foundation helps to provide books to children that came from low income families. This shows the importance DeMar placed on helping the youth grow and learn. He helped to pick out the books for the kids, but he didn’t want to just stop there. DeMar wanted to meet with the kids as well. First Book Canada loved having the support of DeMar and he spent time talking to the kids many times. Not only did he spend time with them, but he donated to the program, signed autographs, and took pictures as well. The program leaders said the DeRozan is a very humble and gracious man. It is great to see such a star give back and help the people around him. This truly shows that there is more to the game of basketball or any other sport for that matter. We all can learn from DeMar in using the gifts and influential power that we have to make a positive impact on the world.
