This allowed for Cody to grow up knowing the game and he ended up playing it himself too. Baseball ran in the family. He started at a young age and played for the little league team out of Chandler, Arizona.
Little League World Series
The little league team that Cody played for made it all the way to the Little League World Series. The LLWS is a tournament of the best youth teams in the nation and is on a big stage. Cody Bellinger attended high school at Hamilton High School in Chandler, Arizona. He joined the baseball team while he went to school there and was quite the ballplayer. Bellinger sure could swing the bat and was well-known for his power at the plate, but he could also pitch. Cody helped his team win on the mound as well. During high school he was named as the Rawlings Perfect Game 2nd Team All-American. Due to his skills, abilities, and great amount of success on the diamond, Cody received lots of attention from scouts at the college and professional level. Cody was offered the opportunity to play at the University of Oregon and had made a verbal commitment to play there. He wanted to be a duck. That all would change when draft day came around.
Heading to L.A.
During the 2013 MLB Draft, the Los Angeles Dodgers selected Cody Bellinger in the fourth round. He was not a first round draft pick, but many teams probably wish they would have taken Cody earlier after seeing the type of player he would develop into. He started out in the minor league system and initially had struggles at the beginning. Cody struck out a lot, but would eventually settle in. Bellinger soon began to adjust to the big league level and started to become a star. Cody continued to work his way up the farm system from rookie ball to Triple-A. The Dodgers liked what they saw in the young kid at each level and decided to give him a shot at the Major League level.
The Big Debut
In April 2017 the Los Angeles Dodgers called up Cody Bellinger to make his Major League debut. The moment that he had been waiting for was finally here…and he took full advantage of it. He ended up going 1 for 3 with an intentional walk during his debut. That is a solid night for any ballplayer and a good way to start a career. After that came the Bellinger power surge. Four days after his first game in the big leagues he ended up hitting his first big league home run. Bellinger didn’t just stop at one though. He hit two in one game that night and became one of the youngest players to do so. A few games later Cody hit a grand slam and had another memorable night. This young star was on a streak and the fans of L.A. loved it. He was hitting balls out of the yard left and right. Cody became the first Dodger to hit five home runs within his first eleven games. In the following months he continued to punish baseballs and send them into orbit. Cody became the first rookie in the history of baseball to hit 10 home runs in a span of 10 games. That’s an incredible streak and Bellinger was just getting started.
Stellar Rookie Season
Cody Bellinger had one of the greatest rookie seasons that the game of baseball has seen. Along with all the home runs he was hitting, Bellinger was named the National League Player of the Week twice and was also named the NL Rookie of the Month twice. He was getting noticed for his performances. Cody had multiple multi-homerun games throughout his first year in the big leagues. He was invited to compete in the Home Run Derby and was named to the 2017 All Star Game. Cody hit for the cycle during his rookie season and was the first Dodger rookie to do so. He broke the National League record for the most home runs in one season with 39. That’s 39 absolute nukes in just your first season. Wow. Bellinger’s name was spreading and many were learning about this new young superstar from Los Angeles. He finished with a list of accomplishments and won the National League Rookie of the Year Award. I mean how could you not win that award with a year like that? One heck of a first year in the show.
The Importance Of Giving Back
Not only is Cody Bellinger a star on the field, but he is off of it as well. The fans love him. In August 2017, Cody participated in a charity event where he helped give back to the youth. During this event he helped give out t-shirts, backpacks, and candy to young kids. These kids were from the Bresee Youth Center which is in the Los Angeles area. This youth center helps with academic tutoring and college readiness programs. The Dodgers foundation donated $10,000 to this youth center and Bellinger gave them his signed All-Star jersey to have on display at the youth center. Cody realizes it is important to give back and reach out to the community. Many of these young kids really looked up to Bellinger and it is good to see him giving back. He reminisced on when he was in their shoes looking up to MLB stars and said it was cool to be that person now that they looked up to. The Dodgers and Bellinger showed that there is more to the game of baseball than just going out there and playing and that it is important to influence those around you positively; to give back to the community and lend a helping hand. We all can learn from the Dodgers and Bellinger in this manner.
