Clayton Kershaw was born and raised in the great state of Texas. The gorgeous city of Dallas was home to Clayton. As a child, he played in youth sports leagues in the Dallas area. He played just about every sport you can think of. When he was younger he played basketball, football, soccer, and baseball. He had one particular friend that he would play on these youth sports teams in Dallas with. His name was Matthew. Clayton and Matthew participated in all kinds of these sports together and they even looked alike. Their parents would get them both mixed up when they were out on the field and would quite often be cheering for the wrong child…which wasn’t a bad thing because they were usually on the same team. It was funny how similar they looked. This friend that Kershaw so often played with would go onto have future successes in the game of football. This was Matthew Stafford that Clayton grew up with who would go onto be a quarterback in the NFL. They both went to Highland High School and played on the same football team. Clayton played under center for Stafford who of course was the teams quarterback. It is crazy to see now how far they both have come and have advanced in their careers. From playing together in youth leagues to being stars in Major League Baseball and the National Football League. Their hometown of Dallas grew two young stars, who would’ve known.
Career Taking Off
Clayton’s baseball career really started to take off in high school. While at Highland High he hit a sort of growth spurt and really started to grow. His game developed along with his physicality and he became a dominant pitcher in the state of Texas. In year of 2006 he put up a 13 win and 0 loss season. His statistics were phenomenal as he had a 0.77 ERA and struck out 139 batters in just 64 innings. The hitters couldn’t touch him. In one of the high schools playoff games Kershaw pitched and threw a perfect game. This wasn’t any normal perfect game though. He struck out every single batter he had faced. All fifteen hitters that came to the plate ended up walking back to the dugout. The game was cut short because of the mercy rule. What more can you ask from a pitcher? What a historic performance. Clayton ended up receiving the “High School Baseball Player of the Year” award and the “Gatorade National Player of the Year”. This great outing that Kershaw had along with the awards got him some attention from pro scouts as just a young high school kid.
The Los Angeles Dodgers ended up selecting the kid from Dallas with the seventh overall pick in the first round of the MLB Draft. Kershaw had committed to play baseball at Texas A&M University, but as the seventh pick he decided to play pro ball with the Dodgers. His signing bonus was the highest for any Dodger at the time and that was $2.3 million. That’s kind of hard to turn down, right? His choice seemed to have worked out for him pretty well. Clayton ended up playing in the minors for about two years before he made his major league debut with the Dodgers. His debut came in 2008 and he struck out the first batter of the game. He ended up throwing six innings with seven strikeouts and only two runs. That’s a pretty good outing for your first time. His career took off from there and he has put up some incredible numbers over the years.
Career Taking Off
Clayton Kershaw had an incredible season in the year of 2011 and this is when he really became well-known and started to become recognized as one of the dominant pitchers in baseball. So far in Clayton’s career he has won 3 Cy Young Awards, an MVP, a Gold Glove, and the Roberto Clemente Award. He has made the All-Star game seven different times. Clayton has led the National League in earned run average (ERA) in 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, and 2017. He led the league in wins in 2011, 2014, and 2017 and ranked number one in strikeouts for the league in 2011, 2013, and 2015. Kershaw has shown his ability to pitch and perform at such a high level. He has been a leader of the National League in pitching for consecutive years. Shall his success continue in his years to come? We will have to continue to watch and see!
One of Clayton’s greatest games came in the summer of 2014 in the month of June. The Los Angeles Dodgers were facing off against the Colorado Rockies. The Rockies were unable to get a single hit off of Kershaw the entire night and he ended up throwing Major League Baseball’s 283rd no hitter. What was so incredible about this no hitter was that he had fifteen strikeouts and there were zero walks. The only reason this performance wasn’t a perfect game is because there was an error during the game, so it was unable to be marked as perfect. Clayton only ended up throwing 107 pitches during this game and averaged less than four pitches per hitter. Talk about efficiency. He didn’t waste any time or beat around the bush. Kershaw went right after the hitters and dominated the game. He kept them off balance all night long. They couldn’t touch number 22. The Dodgers won by a score of 8-0 and this is considered to be one of the top no hitters in the history of the game.
300 Strikeout Season
Another great moment in Clayton Kershaw’s career came during the 2015 season. He reached an incredible mark. Clayton ended up having a 300 strikeout season and was the first pitcher to reach that milestone since Randy Johnson and Curt Schilling. He reached the milestone in his very last outing. Going into his last game of the season he was only six strikeouts away from reaching 300. He ended up achieving this in the 3rd inning of the game and received a standing ovation from Dodger nation. The fans loved it. Kershaw was locked in that night and it didn’t take him long to get there. He ended the 2015 season with 301 strikeouts. What a remarkable moment.
Family Over Everything
The famous Dodger pitcher is married to his high school sweetheart, Ellen Kershaw. They both attended Highland High School and were planning on going to college together as well before Clayton got drafted. She graduated from Texas A&M University, which is where he had committed to play college ball. They have a family together now with a 2-year-old daughter and a 9-month-old son. Their kid’s names are Cali and Charley and it is very important to them to have a tight-knit close family. Ellen and the kids travel all over the country to support dad. When they’re not in school they travel to different cities and stadiums with Clayton. Ellen wants to instill in their kids that family is important and wherever dad is they will be.
The Kershaw family is very involved in their charity and program called Kershaw’s Challenge. The program is designed for underprivileged kids and is used to improve their life and provide opportunities for them. The efforts are mainly located in the United States and the Dominican Republic. The Kershaw family continuously donates money and they have donors involved as well. These donors will end up donating money for every batter that Clayton strikes out. Talk about using baseball for a greater purpose. Ellen always wanted to use baseball as more than just baseball and always enjoyed helping others. Clayton Kershaw’s game and what the Kershaw’s are doing as a family is having a greater impact on the world. I mean that’s what it’s all about, right?
