Work Ethic

Bryce Harper was born and raised in Las Vegas, Nevada. Harper grew up loving the game of baseball and played in youth leagues around the Las Vegas area. He ended up playing with fellow MLB stars Kris Bryant and Joey Gallo. It is interesting to see how they all played together in the same city when they were kids and now they are all competing against each other at the highest level. Bryce worked hard at the game of baseball and attributes much of his work ethic to his father. He stated that his father always worked hard and that is where Harper got it from.

Passing Out Of High School

Bryce Harper’s dad helped him work at the game of baseball and Bryce continued to improve. He played at the high school level, but did not have a normal high school career like many other kids. Harper went to Las Vegas High School, but only attended it for two years. He decided to try and pass the GED so that he could test out of high school and move on. He wanted to do this so that he would then be eligible for the amateur draft. Baseball was life for Bryce Harper. In 2009, Bryce Harper passed the GED test and became eligible for the next year’s draft. He decided to enroll and play at the College of Southern Nevada in the National Junior College Athletic Association. Bryce wanted to prove that he could play at the college level for the upcoming draft in June…so he did just that.

The league that Bryce Harper had joined used wooden bats during the season, which allowed for Harper to showcase how he could swing the lumber. While with Southern Nevada he hit with a batting average of over .440 and had 31 home runs. The schools previous record was 12. I think he was proving his ability just fine. During the NJCAA World Series Harper played lights out and in three games he went 14 for 18 with 4 home runs and multiple extra base hits. The four home runs came in one single game and due to all of this success he was getting lots of notice. Bryce earned the Conference Player of the Year Award and also received the Golden Spikes Award in 2010. Harper had shown what he was capable of and was arguably the greatest college player in the country at the time.

First Pick

With the number one overall pick the Washington Nationals selected Bryce Harper in the 2010 MLB Draft. He had done it. Bryce had graduated from high school early, proved in one season that he could compete and play at the college level, and had been drafted to play professional baseball. He was not just drafted anywhere, but became the very first pick in the draft. Bryce was a phenom and a one of a kind player that many teams wanted to get their hands on. Teams saw the unbelievable amount of potential in the young player and so did the sports agents.

Big Contract

Bryce Harper had one of the most popular sports agents in the world in Scott Boras. Scott helped Harper get a great deal and he ended up signing a 5-year deal with the Nationals for 9.9 million. This deal came with a 6.25 million dollar signing bonus and eight semesters of college tuition paid for as well. Bryce was taken care of, but let’s be honest…do you really think he will need to go back to school? Looks like the game of baseball will be taking care of him with the type of talent and abilities that he has. This young talented star was on the rise.

Big League Debut

Bryce Harper started out in the Washington Nationals minor league system and has worked his way up from there. He had a great fall season and went from Single-A all the way up to Triple-A. In early 2012 Bryce was called up to make his big league debut. In April 2012, Harper made his debut against the Los Angeles Dodgers and got his first major league hit. His success continued from there, but some people didn’t like how Bryce was so young and so successful. Harper was intentionally hit by Cole Hamels in May of 2012. Cole admitted to hitting him on purpose. Bryce continued to prove his ability and ended up stealing home against Hamels during that same inning. Harper wanted to make a statement and it sure is funny how the game of baseball works sometimes isn’t it? The city of Washington loved how this kid played.
