The first player on our list is Eric Dickerson. This is a very popular name among Rams fans and the football world in general. Eric played with the Rams from 1983 to 1987 and sure made an impact when he was there. During his time there he was selected to 4 Pro Bowls in 1983, 1984, 1986, and 1987. He was selected to First Team All-Pro for all four of these Pro Bowls and in 1986 he was also recognized as the NFL Offensive Player of the Year. In 1983, 1984, and 1986 Dickerson was named the NFC Offensive Player of the Year. This man sure knew how to run the football and seemed impossible to stop at some moments. Even in his first season in the league, Eric was named as the NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year. While with the Rams in 1983, 1984, and 1986 he led the entire NFL in rushing yards. Now that shows the kind of skill and talent this young running back had.
Along with the many awards and accomplishments above from Eric Dickerson, there is still more. Dickerson was named a part of the 1980’s All-Decade Team and the NFL 100th Anniversary All-Time Team. These are two great accomplishments. Men that are a part of these groups are not only considered the best players within their organization but are seen as some of the best NFL players of all time. Not only does Eric have many awards, but he also holds a few NFL records. One big NFL record that he holds is the number of rushing yards in a single season. In 1984, Dickerson rushed for 2,105 yards which became the NFL record. He also holds the record for rushing yards in a rookie season at 1,808 and rushing yards in a playoff game with 248. This man was unstoppable during points in his career and the Los Angeles Rams decided to retire his number 29. The Eric Dickerson jersey will remain popular and legendary for a very long time. As you can see Eric Dickerson was one of the best Los Angeles Rams players as well as one of the best NFL players of all time.
A defensive end by the name of Deacon Jones is another one of the best Los Angeles Rams players of all time. Jones played with the squad from 1961 to 1971 and made an impact during his time. Seven years in a row Jones was named to the Pro Bowl from 1964-1970. Of these seven Pro Bowl appearances, five of them he was named to the First Team All-Pro and two of them he was named to Second Team All-Pro. Back-to-back years in 1967 and 1968, Jones was named as the NFL Defensive Player of the Year. He was a defensive force. Deacon Jones is a part of multiple elite groups. These elite groups include the NFL 75th Anniversary All-Time Team, the NFL 100th Anniversary All-Time Team, and the 1960’s All-Decade Team. He was one of the best Los Angeles Rams players and the franchise knew that. They retired the jersey number 75 in honor of Jones. That shows the type of value this man brought to the team, city, and organization as a whole.
The next man on the list has a special place in the heart of Rams fans because he was able to help bring home a Super Bowl championship to the franchise. What makes a great player is one who is able to win…and not only win games, but win championships. Marshall Faulk was able to help lead the Rams to a title in 1999. Faulk played with the Rams from 1999 to 2006. He was the teams running back and helped defeat the Tennessee Titans by a score of 23-16 in Super Bowl XXXIV. Along with helping bring home a championship, Faulk was a 4-time Pro Bowler as a Ram in the years of 1999, 2000, 2001, and 2002. He was First Team All-Pro from 1999 to 2001, all while with the Rams. During those same three years he was named the NFL Offensive Player of the year. The year 2000 was a great year for Faulk as he was also named the NFL Most Valuable Player. Faulk led the entire NFL in rushing touchdowns that season. That is a big award and accomplishment. Marshall’s career was at a high level and in 2001 he won the Bert Bell Award. Faulk will always be seen as one of the best Los Angeles Rams players of all time. The Marshall Faulk jersey number 28 is retired by the Los Angeles Rams as well.
In order to win a Super Bowl, you will not only need a great running back like Marshall Faulk, but a great quarterback as well. That’s where Kurt Warner comes in. Warner was the quarterback of the Rams that helped lead them to their Super Bowl victory over the Titans. Warner is seen as one of the best Los Angeles Rams players and he was a part of this franchise from 1998 to 2003. Kurt not only helped bring the city and franchise a championship, but he was also named the Super Bowl MVP that year. Warner was clutch in the biggest moment of the year and that is what makes a great player. While with the Rams, Warner was also named as the NFL Most Valuable Player in 1999 and 2001. He was named to the Pro Bowl three times in 1999, 2000, and 2001. Of those three Pro Bowl appearances, Warner was named to First Team All-Pro in 1999 and 2001. During those same two years, Kurt led the NFL in passing touchdowns and was also the NFL passing rating leader. Warner was the NFL passing yards leader in 2001 and from 1999 to 2001 he was the NFL completion percentage leader. It seems as though Warner led the NFL in almost every category as a quarterback. Along with that he won the Bert Bell Award in 1999. Kurt will be remembered for a long time as one of the best Los Angeles Rams players and even has a big ole diamond ring to show for it.
The next man on the list is one that stuck around with the Los Angeles Rams for a very long time. Merlin Olsen was a defensive tackle and played with the Rams for his entire career from 1962 to 1976. Olsen is a Rams legend and was named to 14 Pro Bowls during his career. He was elected to a Pro Bowl during every single season except for his last one. Now that is impressive. From 1966 to 1970, Olsen was named to the First Team All- Pro and was named to the Second Team All-Pro in 1965, 1973, and 1974. During his very first season with the Rams he was named the NFL Rookie of the Year and in 1974 he won the Bert Bell Award. Merlin is among some elite groups as well including both the NFL 75th Anniversary All-Time Team and the NFL 100th Anniversary All-Time Team. He is recognized as not only one of the best Los Angeles Rams players, but as one of the best NFL players of all time. Merlin is a member of the NFL 1960’s All-Decade Team as well as the NFL 1970’s All-Decade Team. The Los Angeles Rams retired the number 74 jersey and the Merlin Olsen jersey is popular among Rams fans. Olsen was one heck of a player and the Los Angeles franchise enjoyed the many years they had with him as a part of their team.
Life Past Football
The men listed above are some of the best Los Angeles Rams players the organization has ever seen. They were extremely talented at the game of football, but at some point that game must come to an end. A few of these men listed above have a greater purpose in their life than just playing football and they realize this. One of the best Los Angeles Rams players who also has great faith is Eric Dickerson. In a video interview with Sports Spectrum, Dickerson goes on to say that he grew up in a Christian home and that he has always felt that his relationship with God has been good. In the summer of 2017, Dickerson got to experience some places and things many Christians wish they could. During that summer, Eric had traveled to Israel and was baptized in the Jordan River. He goes on to say this about his experience,
“It was a surreal moment. When you walk the places that Christ walked and to be baptized in the Jordan River, it was amazing.”
Connecting With Scripture
Eric got to experience a moment that he will never forget. Baptism is a great sign of faith and surrendering your life to Christ. This public profession of faith is talked a lot about in scripture. In 1 Peter 3:21 it goes on to say this,
“and this water symbolizes baptism that now save you also – not the removal of dirt from the body but the pledge of a clear conscience toward God. It saves you by the resurrection of Jesus Christ.”
Mark 16:16 says,
“Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned.”
Acts 22:16 goes on to say,
“And now what are you waiting for? Get up, be baptized and wash your sins away, calling on his name.”
Galatians 3:27 says,
“for all of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ.”
Profession Of Faith
These are just a few verses in the Bible that talks about baptism, but there are many more. As we can see through scripture and these verses seen above, being baptized is a spiritual act. It says that whoever believes and is baptized will be saved and that your sins will be washed away. Go ahead and clothe yourselves with Christ. Eric Dickerson is a believer and made that decision to be baptized. While he did it in one of the coolest places, you can be baptized anywhere such as a local church and it is just as important and meaningful to God. God wants a relationship with you. So, if you haven’t been baptized, I challenge you to think about it and this wonderful act and profession of faith.
Kurt Warner’s Thankfulness
Another one of the best Los Angeles Rams players with great faith is Kurt Warner. Warner won a Super Bowl title with the Los Angeles Rams and has also won many games with his other teams he has played with. During many post game interviews, Warner is always thanking God and showing his appreciation for the Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. In 2009 during a post-game interview on Fox Warner went on to say this,
“Everybody is going to be tired of hearing this, but I never get tired of saying it. There’s one reason I’m standing up on this stage today, that’s because of my Lord up above. I got to say thanks to Jesus.”
Thankfulness In The Bible
Warner has an extremely grateful attitude and knows that he wouldn’t be where he’s been and wouldn’t have been able to accomplish the things that he has accomplished without Jesus. The Bible also talks a lot about being thankful and in 1 Chronicles 16:34 it goes on to say,
“Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good; his love endures forever.”
1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 goes on to say this,
“Rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.”
1 Chronicles 29:13 says,
“And now we thank you, our God, and praise your glorious name.”
As we see from scripture it is important to always remain thankful. It seems as if Kurt Warner did just that. This man thanked God and used the platform and stage he had to give thanks and share Jesus with others. We all can learn from this. Let’s be thankful today and use the gifts, platforms, and stages God has given us to share our faith and gratitude with others.
